Understanding AQI
The US Air Quality Index translates pollutant concentrations into a single number. PM2.5 (fine particles) is the most health-relevant — these particles penetrate deep into lungs and enter the bloodstream. During wildfire smoke events, PM2.5 can spike from "Good" to "Hazardous" within hours. AQI above 100 means outdoor air is unhealthy for sensitive groups; above 150, everyone should limit exposure.
